Preparedness Books... of Which to Take Note

Portsoy Woods is my newest book, available November, 10, 2016

It can be purchased on amazon.com or through:
http://booklocker.com/books/8874.html

Portsoy Woods is the story of a young Northern Virginia intelligence analyst who convinces his wife that their young family and four small children, should relocate from the relative comforts and security of their suburban home to a large acreage tract in a very rural setting. This is a difficult decision for them to make initially as it takes them from friends, family, and from good jobs with negligible commutes. The decision to relocate is certainly, at first, counter-intuitive.

They relocate and find that even within their own state,a completely different rural culture, and to some degree, different values exist in comparison to those of the suburban world they knew. Their journey and adaptation, new friends and their learning is explored, as the economy and culture of the country is in decline. They also endured a continued deterioration of the United States, an economic collapse, some notable disasters including a national pandemic, personal losses, and uncertainties. The family learns not only to provide help to family and friends was but when to graciously receive it themselves.

Although this book will probably attract those who are interested in preparedness, pre-emptive relocation, and survivalism, this story of a family is about much more. Told from the perspective of the wife, a registered nurse, it also concerns the value of flexibility, resilience, hope, faith, loss, and charity for one's family, one's friends and for the community. It is also a hopeful look at today's families and of rural life. Anyone who has ever tested the boundaries of their comfort zone in any venue will appreciate this book.

One of the books I read yesterday was E.J. Bohan's Barbed Wire, Barricades and Bunkers: The Free Citizen's Guide to Fortifying the Home Retreat.    On our own farm we have controlled access by installing gates, placing hidden camera monitoring equipment, and planting additional blackberry bushes in natural regions in which trespassers might inadvertently cross to our property..  We do have a section of deep woods which has some barbed wire which predates our ownership here.  It never ceases to amaze me at how the deer so gracefully jump over the barbed wire, and what a pain in the neck it is to human beings who might wish to traverse it.    However, this book would have been an excellent guide to planning access control on any rural property, farm and even some suburban homes.  Bohan discusses at length, the use of barbed wire and  barbed wire fencing alternatives.  He moves on to the uses of bollards.  That tall round post painted yellow between the parking lot and the store is one type of bollard.  He also explains gabions which are another type of access control barrier.   He then includes a chapter on revetments, which are protective walls. There is a lengthy chapter on bunkers. This is very valuable because it discusses the differing types of bunkers for lots of different purposes including as storm shelters. I think my favorite was the concrete pillbox bunker.   This book is an excellent resource for anyone remotely interested in such subjects. Seeing drawings and directions for what is possible in terms of access control and protection of a property you own is exceedingly helpful in that you are less likely to overspend and make costly mistakes, especially on a subject in which not a great deal is authoritatively written.

Most families, even if they don't intend to hide anything from law enforcement, seek a place to hide valuables.   Even if you have a security system, anything can be breached while you are away, and if you are living in a rental home temporarily, for example, a safe might not be practical.  (Some safes can easily be carried away also.)   This book begins the process of our looking in the rooms of our home and selecting hiding places for things that aren't immediately obvious. If we are robbed, and the thief takes his time, these are places that he will likely never find.   This Paladin Press book is brief, but very interesting.

NOTE: Even if you do use some of these techniques, please make sure that someone in your home besides you knows where things are, as the potential for documents and valuables to be lost is great.
